...AND DOING CLEVELAND...

It seemed to herald a new breath of life for Ohio's largest city when crusading San Francisco Sheriff Richard Hongisto quit to become Cleveland's Chief of Police...but that sure didn't last long! Hongisto is on to a new job in New York State. Moving elsewhere

is not uncommon with Clevelanders, especially gays. Less than twenty years ago, this was the sixth largest city in America. Today it is ranked eighteenth!

You can start bar-hopping here at 18, but aren't allowed to drink the hard stuff until you are 21. Can't you imagine trying to enforce that one? Most clubs are fairly quiet during the week, but almost too crowded weekends. Cleveland bars are open until 2:30 a.m. daily, contrary to other parts of Ohio which close

on Sundays. One exception is the only bike and S & M club, Leather Stallion, which closes at 1a.m. Located at 2203 W. St. Clair, there is no sign, so just look for the number on a door marked private.

The three major discos are New Dimensions, 1022 Sumner near E. 9th. Traxx, 1273 W. 9th, and Six-Twenty-Club, 620 Frankfurt, between W. 6th and W. 9th. Dimensions is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, but sure gets a beautiful young crowd on weekends. Upstairs is for guys and downstairs for gals. Traxx is visibly more appealing, but is mixed with some straights, which the management is trying to discourage. The 620 Club is all male and although there is a small disco in back, it is the "hottest" cruise bar in Cleveland. The Exedra on 18th is

Apple, between 620 Club open this fall, and the

Traxx is trying to attract a gay clientelle.

Happy aurants that look promising, but and have yet to prove themselves. Even straight dinner houses are fair, especially downtown but the Keg & Quarter, Firehouse, The atrical and New York Spaghetti House are all ok. Further out can recommend Au Pere Jacques, Leonello's, That Place, Red Fox and Blue Fox.

Godmothers II, 1014 E. 63rd is a popular lesbian club. The Boc-zerie, Gypsy's Rainbow and Twiggie's have all closed if any. one cares. Also-ran, hustlers, drags and other downtown types hangout at J.J.'s or the Zanzibar. The Nantucket and Pickwood Lounges in Lakewood appeal to a mixed older group.

One thing Cleveland needs is a good gay restaurant. The Vaults, 1281 W. 9th, is a fun place featuring a very good Sunday brunch but it does not serve

dinner. The Shaker Club, 2775 S. Moreland in Shaker Heights is a friendly place that may be adding food sometime in the near future. The Hex Cafe in Ohio City and Marlo's, 14501 Detroit, are new mixed rest-

...When a volunteer for GEMMA, the organization for disabled lesbians, asked if she could put up a notice advertising the group's existence in a Salvation Army Goodwill Centre, the headquarters of Salvation Army advised her that no such permission would be given for any lesbian group. MOJA: Gay Black recently began publishing in New York. In its first issue, editors Calvin Lowery and William Harris, call for the establishment of "a national communication net work that is sensitive to our needs and concerns...psychological counseling centers for gay minorities to help with the difficulties of coming out, and a national association of

gay minorities. MOJA CAN BE REACHED C/o Oscar Wilde Memorial Bookshop, N., NY. 10014....

... The Baltimore Anti-Bias Unit has asked the Mayor to support an ordinance for gay rights. If he agrees, the city will join 45 city and county governments throughout the U.S. which has passed such legislation. Five have done so since the

The Holiday Inn, Swingo's and other downtown hotels are conveniently located, but unfortunately none of them have outdoor swimming pools. If you want to try the baths. C.B.C.'s Club II, 1293 W. 9th is by far the best place to go. Cleveland Depo, 1946 St. Clair can be fun, especially if you want to meet some black brothers, and the Club on 32nd St., if you are looking for solitude.

A lot of late night cruising occurs in the area where Traxx, Vaults, 620 and Club Baths are

...The ARCO Boycott appears to be at least somewhat successful. While neither organizers of the boycott nor ARCO have any exact figures on the number of credit cards returned to the giant oil company, that number runs in the hun-

located, but watch out for cops, and avoid the parks which are dangerous. Cruisy book stores include the Broadvue and King's News on Prospect. For up-todate info, pick up a copy of High Gear, Ohio's respected monthly gay paper.

Now, what else does Cleveland have to offer except some generally inclement weather. It has a good symphony orchestra, respected art museums, the Laserium, Lady of Lourdes Shrine and Ohio City, a major restoration project. Oh yes, it is also home of the Cleveland Browns, and you can take that anyway you want!
